The trail leaves the south end of Praia do Rosa, next to a wooden gate, and crosses a grazing hill, with cows on the grass, to the almost deserted Praia do Luz. From the top of the hill you see all of Praia do Luz and part of Barra de Ibiraquera, where Ibiraquera Lagoon meets the sea; it is worth continuing to the calm water of the bar.
If you want a longer walk, the Caminho do Rei (King's Path) is the longer trail between Rosa and Luz, about 6 km through the forest, with waterfalls and views of Ibiraquera Lagoon and the sea. Its route is not on the map: go with a local guide.
Route
Start at the south end of Praia do Rosa: the trailhead is next to a wooden gate and has no sign, but it is easy to find. The shortest way to Praia do Luz takes about 20 minutes; the longer loop over the hill is signposted, is part of the Right Whale Paths and takes about 40 minutes. From Praia do Luz, walk along the sand to Barra de Ibiraquera.
Points of interest
- Praia do Rosa: the start, at the south end, next to a wooden gate.
- Hilltop: views of Praia do Luz and the Ibiraquera sandbar.
- Natural pools: along the way, not always full.
- Praia do Luz: the small beach at the finish.
- Ibiraquera Lagoon: following the sand, the calm-water sandbar.
What to bring
Water and snacks (no vendors along the way), sunscreen and a cap.
Safety tips
Cattle graze along the path: walk calmly. The natural pools only fill at certain tides; in rough seas, keep away from the rocks. At Barra de Ibiraquera, watch out for kitesurfers and wingfoilers.
