What it is
Garopaba has more working flour mills (engenhos) than any other town on the Santa Catarina coast: according to the Santa Catarina Engenhos Network, there are 32, where cassava flour is made together by families and neighbors, a craft handed down from parents to children.
The Farinhada Closing Festival, created by the city hall in 2022, celebrates this tradition and community-based tourism, at a different mill each year: Luiz Zanelatto's mill in Serraria (Encantada) at the first edition, the Ferreira family mill in Campo D'una in 2023 Seu Léle's mill in Capão in 2025, and Gino's mill (Engenho do Gino) in Ambrósio at the 5th edition, in 2026, with a Cultural Heritage certificate ceremony.
What to do
Watch the flour being made, try the home-cooked lunch (roast chicken, pot roast, free-range chicken, polenta and salads), join the Cassava Peeling Contest, in pairs, and enjoy the boi de mamão, the terno de reis and live music. There is also a craft fair and an exchange of cassava cuttings.
