Praia da Barra sits between Praia da Ferrugem and Praia do Ouvidor. A channel of the lagoon, known as Lagoa de Garopaba, Encantada, Capão or Ferrugem, separates Barra from Ferrugem. There are no kiosks or shops: it is a quiet place.
On Morro do Índio there are shell mounds (sambaquis) and stone tool workshops more than 3,500 years old, traces of the peoples who lived on this coast.
The most visited spots
- Lagoon channel: to the north, calm shallow water where Garopaba Lagoon meets the sea, good for paddling and canoeing.
- Morro do Índio: the headland on the border with Ferrugem, with a shell mound, stone-tool workshops and a lookout.
- South end: rocks, dunes and open sea; the Caranha Trail to Ouvidor starts here.
Getting there
Easy, signposted access from the SC-434 road, along Estrada da Barra.
Features
To the north, the channel water is calm and shallow; to the south there are rocky points and dunes.
Things to do
Stand up paddle and canoeing in the channel, walks, the sunset and the Caranha trail, which links Barra to Praia do Ouvidor.
Safety tips
There are no kiosks or shops on the beach: bring water and whatever you need, and take your trash back with you. In the open sea, to the south, go in with care.
