Praia de Garopaba is right in town. It has a calm sea, wide views and a long promenade with restaurants, bars, cafés, hotels, inns and shops. At the right-hand end are the historic center, São Joaquim Church, Praça 21 de Abril and the Our Lady of Lourdes grotto.
The most visited spots
- Promenade and fishing shacks: the center of the beach, with restaurants, stand-up paddle and kayak rental and the fishing boats on the sand.
- Historic Center end: São Joaquim Church, the mansion and, on foot, the Grotto, Praia da Preguiça, the Escadinha and Praia da Vigia.
- Canto dos Morrinhos: the biggest waves on the beach, sought by surfers, with the wooden stairs on the rocks, Mirante Leste above and the skate park next door.
Getting there
It is downtown, along the seafront promenade (reference address: Rua Lauro Müller). You can walk there from almost anywhere downtown. Free, open access.
Features
An urban beach with calm water, a wide promenade, hotels, inns, restaurants and fishing boats on the sand. The historic center and Preguiça Beach are at the right-hand end. At the north end, Canto dos Morrinhos has the biggest waves on the beach and is the stretch surfers head for.
Things to do
Walk or jog along the promenade, try stand-up paddling and kayaking (gear is rented on the seafront) and watch the fishing boats come in. At the right end, on foot, are the Historic Center, Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto, Praia da Preguiça, the Escadinha and Praia da Vigia; at the Morrinhos end, a wooden staircase climbs the rocks, and on top is Mirante Leste, with viewing binoculars and a view of the whole beach. The sunset from the Historic Center viewpoint is one of the best in town.
Safety tips
Even when the sea is calm, go in with care and keep away from boats and water-sports areas. In high season downtown gets busy: walk there if you can.
