Praça 21 de Abril is the heart of Garopaba's Historic Center. It used to be called Praça da Matriz: the community gathered around the old São Joaquim Mother Church, and nearby was the São Joaquim whaling station, where whale oil for lighting and building was processed. The current name recalls April 21, a national date linked to freedom.
Around it are colorful houses, cobbled streets, art galleries, craft shops and cultural spaces, and the Mullet Fishing Festival is held there.
