Rio do Poeta (the Poet's River) runs through the Siriú neighborhood, at the north end of the beach. Its water comes down the hill from the Siriú Waterfall area, passes under a bridge at the foot of the hill and joins the waters of Lagoa do Macacu and the Siriú River near the beach, reaching the sea at the north end of Siriú Beach.
The name honors Mr. Francolino, as told by Garopaba historian Fernando Bittencourt. Francolino fished this river by canoe and raised his family here, and he was a folk singer: he improvised verses for the Bandeira do Divino, a religious tradition of the community, and learned Garopaba's stories as a boy, listening to the adults. His voice was so strong that when he came down the road with the banner he could be heard from far away, and the men of the house would tell their wives: "put the coffee on, Francolino is coming".
Points of interest
- Bridge and footbridge: the path along the river to the beach.
- Cachoeira do Siriú: where the river comes down from the hill.
- Macacu Lagoon: where the waters meet near the beach.
- Praia do Siriú: where the river reaches the sea, at the north end.
Getting there
At the north end of Siriú Beach, about 9 km from downtown Garopaba. The wooden bridge over the river is on the way to the beach, and a wooden boardwalk continues to the sand at the north end; many people use it to reach the beach.
Features
A small river that winds through the coastal scrub and the dunes until it meets Lagoa do Macacu. It has a wooden bridge and boardwalk, with the restaurants, pizzeria and guesthouses of the north end nearby.
Things to do
Walk the boardwalk and the bridge to the beach, see where the river meets the lagoon and learn Francolino's story. Siriú Viewpoint is at the same end of the beach, the islet can be seen from the sand, and Siriú Waterfall is up the hill the river comes down from.
Safety tips
After heavy rain the water comes down the hill with force: stay out of the river then. Respect the houses and land along the way and take your trash back with you.
