Halfway along the Casqueiro Trail, between Praia da Vigia and Silveira Beach, the headland forms seawater pools among the rocks. Large boulders and rock walls in front hold back the waves, and the water flows in from the sides through a kind of corridor. So even when the sea is a bit rough, some pools stay sheltered and many people swim in them.
Near the pools are two curiosities of the trail: Pedra da Coxinha, a rock in the sea shaped like a coxinha, the Brazilian chicken croquette, and Pedra do Galeão, a huge rock wall split by a deep crack that looks like a canyon. Sphinx Rock (Pedra da Esfinge) is also on this stretch of coast.
Points of interest
- Pedra da Coxinha: the rock in the sea shaped like a coxinha, right by the pools.
- Pedra do Galeão: the rock wall split by a deep crack, just ahead.
- Sphinx Rock: about 280 meters away, toward Silveira.
- Casqueiro Trail: the trail between Vigia and Silveira that passes the pools.
Getting there
On foot along the Casqueiro Trail: from Praia da Vigia or the north end of Silveira Beach, the pools are roughly halfway. The last stretch is over the rocks.
Features
Natural seawater pools among the headland rocks, some shallow and some deep, facing the open sea.
Things to do
Swimming in the sheltered pools when the sea is calm, photos of the headland and Pedra da Coxinha, and a rest stop before continuing to Pedra do Galeão and Silveira.
Safety tips
Wear sturdy shoes and keep away from wet rocks. Some pools are deep: only go in where the water is calm, and never when rough seas are breaking over the rocks in front. Do not climb down the Pedra do Galeão crack. This is a protected area: take your trash back.
